How Useful Are Probiotics?

Our bodies are made of two kinds of bacteria- good and bad. Probiotics are known as the good bacteria that aid the digestive system. The World Health Organisation defines probiotics as “live micro- organisms which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host.”   Today, with growing health concerns there is a need to keep our gut healthy. The more the good bacteria in our system the more chances of avoiding a range of diseases and health problems.

Lactobacillus Probiotic Acidophilus and Bacillus Subtilis are two of the most common probiotics found in the human system. The former, is a common type of probiotic found in your intestines. It is known to release lactic acid in the body by producing an enzyme known as lactase. It can be found in several everyday foods such as cheese and yogurt. The latter, is a rod-shaped, Gram- positive bacterium that is found in soil and the human gut. It is often included in probiotic supplements and helps with gastrointestinal and urinary tract infections. Due to the robust nature of Bacillus Subtilis it survives the process of manufacturing, packaging, and shipping of probiotic products.

Further on, let us look at the benefits of probiotics to the human system:

1. Probiotics helps in keeping away various diseases: when the human body has a low amount of good bacteria thus, weakening the immune system. Intake of probiotic supplements or natural foods that contain probiotic elements aids in increasing good bacteria hence, making the gut healthier and less vulnerable to infections.

2. Help in bowel conditions: enzymes released from the Lactobacillus Acidophilus and Bacillus Subtilis are found in the human gut and one of the major benefits of probiotics is helping the digestive tract. Consuming probiotics helps in reducing bowel disorders like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Diarrhea.

3. Probiotics help in weight loss: probiotics keep you fuller for longer thus keeping unnecessary urges at bay. It has also been proven that consumption of probiotics prevent the absorption of dietary fat in the intestine.

4. Helps in mental health: probiotics have been scientifically proven to help in reducing mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.

In conclusion, probiotics not only aid in keeping the gut healthy but also in several other health issues. A healthy gut is the answer to a healthy life included with daily diet and exercise. Lastly, probiotics are rarely known to have side- effects.
