How Indian Biotech Is Bringing Innovation.

India has been driving innovation in the biotechnology space since 1986. We were the first country to have a fully operational, government approved, dedicated biotechnology unit in the world. Hyderabad, Bangalore, Lucknow, Kerala, and Chennai were the first cities where biotechnology parks were set up. The aim of these parks was to drive innovation and fasten the commercialization process.

Furthermore, to encourage the innovative process the government launched a scheme in 2012 called the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC). The aim of this not-for-profit enterprise was to foster, enhance, and stimulate the research and innovation of the Indian biotech sector, especially start-ups and Small- Medium Sized Enterprises (SME’s). India was always self-sufficient with basic research but the challenge lied in making these researches commercial. This is where BIRAC helped the industry, they have now tied up with the Bill and Miranda Gates foundation to deal with problems in development and tackle global health. A big factor that boosts innovation in this sector is the country’s massive population. It gives room to foster several ideas of innovation and come up with new developments in the health care sector.

Owing to BIRAC there has been a significant growth in the biotech industry in India. The creation of a vibrant and proactive start-up environment has enabled a growth in the communication between academia and industry. This initiative by the government has been responsible for supporting all components of the incubation like financing, capacity building, mentoring, and product commercialization. It has also been the cause for an international strategic partnership with several prestigious alliances such as NESTA.

Apart from growing internationally, BIRAC has also driven several domestic innovations like stimulating the development of new vaccines, medical devices and bio-therapeutics to focus on the rising diseases in the country. Their main objective is to produce accessible and affordable products as per societal needs. Thanks to this initiative, there has been growth of several biotechnology companies in India.

One such biotechnology company in India that drives innovation in Sanzyme Biologics. They several strains they use to develop probiotics with different uses and targets. Bacillus Clausii is one of the strains that is used to prevent gut barrier impairment and is being currently studied in respiratory infections and gastrointestinal disorders. This strain is recommended for AAD and as a coadjuvant for H. Pylori eradication therapy. Lastly, 2019 is going to be a year of innovation in the biotechnology sector due to the various international alliances with World Bank and Bill and Miranda Gates foundations. The health sector is seeing a rapid increase in newly developed medicines and cures for various diseases.
